Senior Manager, Exams Publishing

Full-time, permanent, 37.5 hours per week

Salary: Circa GBP50,000 per annum

Job Purpose:

Reporting to the Head of eAssessment, this is a key leadership role in the eAssessment team, which has full accountability for the on-time publication of high quality examinations for the International Baccalaureate's Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme (DP) and Career Related Programme (CP). The International Baccalaureate (IB) works in over 150 countries and this role will oversee production of examinations in over 80 languages. This role will also lead the phased transition from paper based exams to innovative on-screen examinations and re-engineer workflow and processes accordingly.

Job Duties:

Publication of examinations

  • Accountable for ensuring the effective and efficient running of all the authoring, editorial, translation and production activities leading to the publication of high quality examinations materials in all supported languages for each examination session, including examination papers and on-screen examinations, on time and on budget

  • Accountable for mitigating risks and contingency planning to ensure the security and timely delivery of examinations throughout the production cycle

  • Accountable for capturing lessons learned and ensuring improvements are made after each session

  • Responsible for ensuring effective collaboration with colleagues in other divisions/departments for activities that are related to the publication of examinations (e.g. Subject Managers, Multilingual Publishing staff)

  • Accountable for ensuring the IB's examination material compliance with international copyright law.

Process development and change management

  • Responsible for leading on examinations publications projects and related initiatives on behalf of the eAssessment team

  • Contribute to strategic change within the Assessment Division and throughout the IB, where appropriate

  • Responsible for implementing improved systems and operating model for the Exam Publishing team

  • Responsible for ensuring that due diligence is undertaken before a significant change is introduced that may affect Subject Managers, authors, schools and/or candidates

  • Responsible for managing changes to exams publishing processes that result from the introduction of eAssessment technologies and the move to on-screen examinations.


  • Responsible for setting and managing the budget for areas of work

  • In conjunction with relevant colleagues, responsible for vendor contracts and financial management.

Leadership and management

  • Provide leadership to create a high-performance team, motivated professionals who are results driven, contributing to the success and performance of the team and the IB

  • Responsible for the line management, performance management and professional development of Associate Managers and their teams

  • Collaborate with Heads of Assessment Delivery and Development to ensure that the handoff points between Subject Managers and Exams Publishing are appropriate and adhered to

  • Collaborate with the Multilingual Publishing Group to have consistency in the corporate approach to translation and publishing

  • Responsible for keeping up-to-date on translation and publishing good practices and innovations.

Vendor and contract management

  • Manage the relationship with vendors and suppliers including, printers and authors

  • Identifies recruitment needs for external contributors, ensuring adequate provision of resources, as well as coverage of language variations and areas of expertise.

Technology & Systems

  • Supervise the research leading to purchase of editorial production and translation tools.

Job Requirements:

  • Substantial successful experience in high level regulatory or technical multilingual publication leadership activities and/or operational management

  • Demonstrable experience of change management

  • Knowledge of technology solutions and quality assurance in translation and publishing

  • Excellent Project Management skills

  • Ability to demonstrate intellectual leadership through sharing knowledge of relevant developments in the publications arena

  • Experience in budgeting and resource allocation

  • Ability to take responsibility openly for complex and difficult decisions. Deliver them to internal and external groups and individuals in an effective and sensitive way

  • Resilient and capable of working under pressure and responding to changing priorities and deadlines

  • Excellent communicator

  • Ability to role model best in class editorial practices and continuous professional development

  • Knowledge of the IB, IB Programmes or being an IB Alumni is a plus.
