IDEXX, the global leader in Veterinary Diagnostics, is seeking a qualified CLINICAL PATHOLOGIST to join a team of 30 veterinary professionals serving the UK market.
IDEXX Laboratories Ltd UK employs 12 clinical pathologists, 8 anatomic pathologists and 6 internal medicine specialists. We are looking to further expand the UK professional team with the addition of a fulltime qualified Clinical Pathologist to be based at our Reference Laboratory in Wetherby, West Yorkshire.

The Wetherby Laboratory performs high quality diagnostic work for a variety of animal species, is accredited to the ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standard for testing laboratories and employs more than 120 staff between veterinary professionals, qualified technicians, management, and clerical staff. The majority of the diagnostic work originates from small animals, with a smaller but significant number of equine, large animals, avian and exotic specimens.

The prospective candidates will contribute to the general diagnostic clinical pathology caseload of the laboratory. IDEXX Laboratories is a service-focused organisation and provides a high level of interpretative assistance to laboratory clients. All activities must comply with the laboratory Quality Policy and be consistent with corporate marketing objectives and best practice management objectives.


• Microscopic evaluation of cytology and haematology specimens submitted to the laboratory and preparation of personalised reports for clients on the findings of these studies.

• Preparation of personalised written reports of laboratory results for clients in the area of biochemistry, haematology, endocrinology, and microbiology.

• Telephone consultations with laboratory clients regarding interpretation of laboratory data or other laboratory-related, clinical issues. Alongside the Reference Laboratory duties, the Clinical Pathology Team is regularly involved in supporting our IDEXX in-house customers with the interpretation of laboratory results generated with the IDEXX in-house instruments.

• Assisting with the development and validation of new assays offered to clients.

• Participation in the laboratory Quality Assurance programs.

• Maintenance of personal professional competency and participation in the continued professional development by self-study, attendance at scientific meetings, and participation in internal seminar programs.

• Supporting the Head of Department in maintaining the turnaround times of cytology and written pathologist reporting within the established laboratory goals.

• Finally, customer education, participation in validation studies, and internal training of our technical staff complete the list of activities requested for this position.


EDUCATION: A degree in Veterinary Science registerable with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Preference will be given to prospective candidates who hold a recognised qualification in Veterinary Clinical pathology (ECVCP, ACVP, FRCPath) and have previous experience working in a commercial diagnostic laboratory and a commitment to providing a high quality and personalised pathology service. Candidates without a formal qualification in clinical pathology, but eligible to sit a board exam with the relevant colleges, will be considered depending on experience, particularly in cytopathology.

EXPERIENCE: Circa 3 years experience in diagnostic clinical pathology and cytology.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Advanced competency in diagnostic veterinary cytology. Sound reasoning skills enabling both sound scientific judgment and appropriate management decisions. Keyboard skills and basic computer literacy are essential.
