About us:

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) is the principal UK public funder of research on underlying processes in bioscience, covering plant and animal and microbial sciences. The research we fund enhances our understanding and quality of life - from the design of low carbon fuels and renewable chemicals including new drugs and therapies, through improvements in livestock and crop breeding, to food technology.

Identifying emerging fields of research, developing new funding schemes and fostering collaborations between academia and business, we ensure the UK retains a world-leading position in biosciences and that the public is engaged with key issues and debates.

BBSRC are recruiting 5 Strategy and Policy Officers across its Science Group (three open ended, two fixed term).

In this role you will:

  • provide strategic briefing and contribute to the development of BBSRC and wider UK bioscience strategies
  • provide advice to the academic and business community on BBSRC strategy and funding opportunities
  • analyse the portfolio of BBSRC investments in areas relevant to our strategic priorities
  • maintain awareness of bioscience research and horizon scan for emerging trends and opportunities
  • represent BBSRC in a range of internal and external meetings and act as an ambassador for BBSRC both nationally and internationally.

About you:

You will ideally have a Master's Degree or PhD in a biological or related subject or previous relevant experience. Having experience of the interface between bioscience and other disciplines, particularly the physical sciences, is desirable.

You must be able to interpret and summarise primary and secondary data and information and use graphics and images to support narrative and you will write well-structured and clearly articulated documents aimed at internal and external audiences.

You will factor aspects of the role for emerging social, political and environmental trends which might impact the team's work. In addition you will have good inter-personal and organisation skills.
