At the Animal and Plant Health Agency, we safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy. Working on a range of projects, you will provide vital assistance in our work to tackle viral threats to birds and mammals that may also cause human disease, and as such work is carried out inbiocontainment levels 2 and 3 laboratories.You'll help us to detect avian viruses and mammalian influenza for a range of purposes -the International Reference Laboratories (IRL), diagnosis and surveillance, or applied research questions that limit the impact of disease.

Our Mammalian Influenza and Avian Virology workgroup will rely on your assistance, to ensure we deliver our IRL, research and diagnosis to the highest standards of quality and safety (animal and human pathogens). Your remit will range from carrying out laboratory operational and technical work, through to database management, assistance with accreditation, and training of new staff, students and visitors.

Youwill work on a range of poultry diseases - mainly, influenza A and Newcastle Diseaserelated to the IRL and research projects focused on the poultry and/or pig populations. As well as providing support for 'bird-flu' and 'swine-flu' diagnostics and surveillance programs.

Ideally qualified to degree level in a scientific subject, you will bring to the role skills in virological, molecular biology, serology and tissue culture assays and data analyses. A good understanding of UKAS17025 and ISO9001quality standards will be essential. A highly organised individual with good communication skills, you are equally confident working independently and as part of a team.

Please note, we will expect you to work an on-call rota, with some out-of-hours work including weekends and Bank Holidays.
