Project Accountant

The role

Reporting to the deputy CFO, this role is responsible for ensuring the consistency of information between the Project Cost Control team and the Finance team, as well as consistency in all financial reporting to management and the Board.

The role is key to communicating, challenging and understanding the differences between the two information systems. The post holder must have excellent analytical skills with the ability to communicate confidently and clearly at all levels across the business. The post holder will also assist with the implementation of new systems and processes that will further reinforce the controls in place. They will also be required to provide support to the Finance and Cost Control teams.

Key responsibilities

• Reconcile data and report between the Project cost control system (PIMS) and the finance ERP system (SAP), including proactive investigation and understanding of any discrepancies.

• Review monthly transactions and provide analysis of incurred costs to date.

• Prepare monthly management accounts for the Project team, including variance analysis to forecast and budget.

• Review monthly forecast, providing updates and narrative to explain variances as required.

• Provide support and information to the Finance team during financial audits and in relation to project activities

• Translate and review monthly progress against forecast and budget with Project area managers.

• Track financial impact of risks and opportunities.

• Provide accounting and finance support to the Project and wider Finance team to aid end-to-end procurement process, from raising purchase orders through Goods Receipting to ensuring efficient payments to vendors.

• Assist in developing, implementing and improving Project control processes and reporting requirements.

• Liaise with the Project director, Project area managers and Project controller.

• Co-ordinate the annual budget preparation for the Project team area

• Work with advisors to prepare the annual research and development claim.

Skills, experience and attributes

• Qualification in a recognised accounting discipline (ACA, ACCA or CIMA)

• Experience of working within a matrix organisation/decentralised finance function

• Experience of large scale engineering or construction project

• Exposure to project management principles, preferably with practical experience of working on a large-scale project

• Experience of working in a multi-cultural environment

• Understanding of project reporting and project cost control

• Confident and clear communicator

• Excellent relationship building skills and team working ethics

• Good listener

• Calm and resilient

• Adept with software systems

• Experience of SAP preferable (S4 Hana)

• Able to work on own initiative

• Excellent attention to detail
