The purpose of this post is to develop the Food Safety Group's expertise and capacity through R&D activities in the area of analytical chemistry for food contaminants, particularly marine and freshwater biotoxins. You will work in the Cefas Science Directorate, located in the Weymouth laboratory.

As an experienced postdoctoral organic analytical chemist, you will work directly with the Principal Analytical Chemist, focussing on the delivery of work in support of the marine and freshwater toxin research programme.

Instrumental work will involve sample processing, extraction, clean-up procedures, analysis using Liquid Chromatography with UV and fluorescence detection, and quantitative tandem mass spectrometry.

You will also develop expertise and capacity in support of the toxin monitoring programme by undertaking R&D activities in the area of method development and refinement. You will contribute to other R&D and business development activities as required.

Through the above activities you will provide up-to-date scientific advice and dissemination to the Principal Chemist, Project Managers, biotoxins staff, Directorate managers, and customers, where relevant, in relation to research aquatic chemistry.

You will also provide professional supervision, training and guidance for staff in relation to specialist chemistry aspects as required.

You will be capable of developing awareness of the needs for maintaining the existing UKAS accreditation of analytical chemistry activities, ensuring the R&D activities conducted in your role will enable future accreditation requirements to be successfully met.
