We are seeking a Senior Bioscience Contracts Specialist to join our Business Development Group at the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control

With circa 1300 staff based in two main locations and peripatetically across the UK and abroad, we enhance and improve the health of millions of people every day through the effective regulation of medicines and medical devices.

A centre of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, The National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC) is a global leader in the characterisation, standardisation and control of biological medicines. NIBSC plays a major role in assuring the quality of biological medicines worldwide through the provision of biological reference materials, by testing products and carrying out research. Our expert scientists also provide advice on a routine basis and in response to emergencies.

Purpose of the role:

NIBSC's Senior Bioscience Contracts Specialist leads the Institute's contracts service for agreements with customers, collaborators and funders, and has line management responsibility for a second contracts specialist. This small contracts team is responsible for providing an efficient contract processing service for NIBSC, ensuring effective assessment, drafting and negotiation of a wide range of agreements.

This is a specialist role which requires significant experience of contract drafting and negotiation, a good understanding of contract law and IP, and a strong background in bioscience. The post holder will be expected to provide relevant advice and training to Institute management and scientists, and to oversee the legal/business assessment of work, including consideration of possible conflicts of interest, in line with organisational policy. Experience of both commercial and non-commercial agreements would be an advantage.

The successful candidate will manage a substantial and wide ranging portfolio of cases. Excellent organisational, time management and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to work collaboratively and in multi-disciplinary teams.

Person requirements:

  • A relevant qualification in contract law and/or IP or equivalent experience or relevant work experience
  • A science degree in a subject related to the work of NIBSC, or equivalent experience. Post-graduate laboratory experience is preferred.
