The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is the UK government department responsible for safeguarding our natural environment, supporting our world-leading food and farming industry, and sustaining a thriving rural economy. Our broad remit means we play a major role in people's day-to-day life, from the food we eat, and the air we breathe, to the water we drink. Defra is a ministerial department, supported by 33 agencies and public bodies.

This is a challenging yet exciting role that will be influential in shaping the organisations corporate transformation programme. The Head of Corporate Strategy role will sit as a key member of the Corporate Services Leadership Team (CSLT) and will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer. You will be responsible for developing the vision for Defra Group Corporate Services and the Smarter Working campaign. You will also be an influential advocacte for Defra’s work, developing relationships at senior level both internally and externally. This is a new role within the business which would allow the postholder to work for and behalf of the COO to transform the way the Defra group operates.

The postholder will have a proven track record of effective leadership in a post that allows you to set and direct vision. You will be a natural leader, with enthusiasm and energy to motivate and inspire teams across the organisation. As a strategic thinker you will be able to deliver outcome-focused business plans and be able to respond swiftly to changing priorities. You will be a confident communicator, able to engage successfully at a senior level with stakeholders including media representation.
