At York Council, we are proud of our social workers and we should be. Their skill and commitment to the city's children and families is why Ofsted recently rated us good.
But we want to go further. We are going to continue investing in children's social care and we are determined to make York the ideal place to progress your social work career.
In York we work as a whole team, prioritising support, training and development to create conditions where effective, relationship-based and child-centred practice can flourish.
Our vision for social work is simple: excellent social work services for vulnerable children.
If you share our vision and have the skills and motivation to drive forward practice and want to develop your career, we want to hear from you.

Are you keen to ensure that safeguarding concerns are addressed in a robust way? Can you lead a team dedicated to achieving change in families (where there are child protection plans in place) or seeking legal security for children if change is not possible?
Are you keen to manage a dedicated team of social workers, a senior practitioner, an NQSW and Social Care Assistant?
At York we have prioritised manageable caseloads with the team currently holding an average of 12.8 individual children per worker, and are committed to achieving excellent standards of work.
We are looking for someone with experience of court/child protection work and either proven team management skills or those with experience of supervision or deputising.
You will take responsibility for setting high standards in your team, for the overall effective functioning of the team and delivery of outputs to agreed deadlines.
You will provide monthly supervision to team members and be accountable for the quality of work produced/decisions made within the team. You will work as part of a team of first line managers in the safeguarding service and be responsible for relationships with a range of internal and external colleagues including referral and assessment and permanence teams.
In addition to competitive salaries, we offer a wider competitive package including;
- Manageable caseloads
- Comprehensive and tailored induction package to all new employees
- Local Authority pension scheme, generous annual leave entitlements and a salary sacrifice scheme to assist with the purchase of travel, child care and cars
- Agile and flexible working including technological support, access to 'pool cars', easy access to your peers, supervisors and managers.
- Confidential free Coaching support
- Access to a number of social opportunities within the workplace, including yoga and other social activities
City of York Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all employees and volunteers to share this commitment. We require the successful candidate to undertake an enhanced Criminal Record check via the Disclosure and Barring Service.
The postholder will have access to secure government sites or email. In order to use these systems, the Cabinet Office requires the HR Team to carry out Baseline Personnel Standard Security (BPSS) checks.
