Species choice and silvicultural characteristics

Farnham, Surrey

GBP32,811- GBP35,703, plus benefits

Background Information

The post is based in the Forest Management Science Group at Alice Holt, Farnham, Surrey. The main aim of the team is to improve the scientific understanding of silvicultural practice with the objective of increasing the resilience of forests to climate change and biotic threats. Our work is currently focussed on five main areas: silvicultural systems; emerging species; pesticides and vegetation management; long term experiments and plant production. We achieve our aims using a range of scientific methods including field experiments, surveys, laboratory studies and literature reviews. The team has a strong track record of producing respected practical guidance on the management of forests and supporting this with evidence published in peer-reviewed scientific papers.

The key responsibilities for the role will include:

  • Leading, managing and reporting on scientific projects relating to species choice and silvicultural characteristics.
  • Providing authoritative scientific and technical advice on species to arboreta, European and national research projects, colleagues in Forest Research and the forestry sector.
  • Contributing to Forest Research's scientific and financial targets as set out in the Corporate Plan.
