At the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO), we keep the marine industries and the armed forces safe. That’s a big statement to make, but as the key suppliers of world-class geospatial information and data, it’s something that we’re proud to do. Not only that, but our work also enables other marine activities such as scientific research and environmental protection. The accuracy of our work is crucial to these vital fields, and as such we are committed to keeping pace with their needs. As such, we are currently undergoing a period of transformation in which we are becoming more data-focused by utilising data science techniques, and we therefore have both a junior and a senior opportunity to join the team.

Whether you are new to the field of data science, or you are more experienced and are seeking to develop your knowledge, we have capacity for innovative thinkers to join our numbers. In both of these fascinating roles, you will predominantly be tasked with computer programming and pre-analysis problem-solving, coming up with innovative solutions that will help us to identify and shape possibilities that will ultimately be used to enhance the potential of UKHO. In the senior role, you will have the confidence to lead on collaborative projects with external partners, taking on a variety of interesting big data/ machine learning challenges involving data from ship tracking, plus oceanographic and satellite data. In the junior role, you will be exposed to real challenges, but you will also have plenty of support to help you develop the requisite skills to eventually work independently. In both roles you will review technical scientific papers, furthering your understanding of scientific, big data, and data science disciplines, and you will forge contacts with those in relevant fields and academia, plus the private and public sectors.

These are fascinating opportunities to be involved in the type of work that ultimately saves lives and shapes our understanding of the planet. As such, you will be a team-player who is keen to share knowledge with your colleagues.

For the junior role, you will, therefore, be degree-qualified in mathematics/statistics, or in a scientific or engineering discipline, or relevant data science or data analysis experience plus be able to programme in either SQL, R, Python, Matlab or Scala.

You must hold a degree in Mathematics/Statistics or in a scientific or engineering discipline.

Have some programming experience in one of the following: R, Python, Matlab, Scala.

Have some experience in processing data and completing data analysis tasks. Collaborating and Partnering. Making Effective Decisions

If you have experience of processing geospatial, marine or oceanographic data that would be beneficial, but it is more crucial that you have a good grasp of designing and implementing machine learning pipelines. You will be passionate about learning and developing your grasp of this detailed arena.

With an interesting remit of being a civil service organisation that has a commercial focus, UKHO offers a fascinating career path for every member of the team. We’re dedicated to ensuring those who are on the sea can navigate the waters safely, so if you share our passion for this fascinating field and are keen to help us maintain our industry-leading reputation, then we’d love to hear from you.
