Are you creative, positive and resilient? Could you support adults with learning disabilities, helping them live independently in their local community?

Because of the nature of the services, we are only able to accept applications from male candidates.

MacIntyre is a award winning national charity supporting people with learning disabilities. Our core belief is that everyone has potential, something to offer and a valuable contribution to make to their community.

Last year we opened a new Supported Living services in the Wigan area. We support five men, each in their own home in different locations around Wigan, including the Warrington borders. We are looking for full-time (38 hours per week) Support Workers to come and work for us.

About the role

The men we will be supporting in these single tenancies have learning disabilities and/or autistic spectrum disorders. They also have forensic care needs, which means they are at risk of committing offences involving the criminal justice system.

You will support the men so they can begin to live more independently, helping them learn domestic skills such as shopping, cooking and cleaning, handling money. You'll encourage them in appropriate social interactions. You will join in with their favourite activities, perhaps attending sporting events, going out for a meal, or for a day out at a local attraction.

The men are likely to display behaviour that can be challenging. Each man will have a detailed individual support plan to follow, and you will receive full training and the day-to-day help and advice of your line manager.

You'll take your turn working shifts on a rota, including days, evenings, weekends, bank holidays and sleep-ins (approx. 2 - 3 per week).

The work can be demanding and doesn't suit everyone, but if it's right for you, you'll find it incredibly rewarding and valuable.

What we need from you

You'll need a positive, non-judgemental approach, and ideally some experience of working with vulnerable people. Perhaps you have a particular interest in psychology, or in developing a career working with people who are on the autistic spectrum.

You'll need to be a clear, creative communicator, able to both respect and reinforce boundaries, and to follow agreed support plans closely and accurately.

It is essential for these positions that you hold a full manual driving licence which allows you to drive in the UK, as you will be required to drive service mobility vehicle.
