Support Worker - St Christopher's School

Location: Westbury Park, Bristol

Salary: Starting salary £16,640 (FTE)

Hours: Full time and part time available

Aurora is an innovative provider of education and care for children, young people and adults with special educational needs and disabilities. We are currently looking for a Support Worker to join Aurora St Christopher’ School.

Aurora St Christopher’s School supports children and young people aged 5 to 19 years with severe and complex difficulties (PMLD, SLD) including physical and sensory needs.

We have one aim, to empower the children and young people we support to develop and grow in their own unique and inspiring way. In so doing, we work to progress all our students in five distinct areas including: self-care, communication, community engagement, decision making and emotional resilience.

The school and care homes have recently undergone a multimillion pound redevelopment which has completely modernised the living and learning environments, designed specifically to meet the individual and complex needs of the children and young people we support.

The Role:

This role is essential to the development and maintenance of a stable, happy and caring environment. You will build trusted relationship with children and young people and put their health, safety, development and welfare first. The role will provide appropriate personal and emotional support to children and young adults within residential and education/learning environments and with off-site activities.

Key Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Implement the Waking Day Curriculum for children and young adults, in order to meet their current needs and enable them to achieve on-going development and growth
  • Support and facilitate learning and independence
  • Contribute to planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes and plans
  • Support the maintenance a safe, homely environment which reflects the ages and interests of the Children/Young Adults
  • Assist the Education team (as appropriate for provision) in creating an environment which supports education and learning
  • Develop and maintain own effective relationships with all including parents, guardians, social workers and other professionals and agencies as required
  • Understand and comply with the relevant quality standards, developing own practice so that it meets and wherever possible exceeds these
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures and regulatory and legal requirements of the role and of the Aurora Values and be prepared to challenge others where behaviour does not demonstrate this


  • Level 3 Diploma in Childcare or equivalent, desirable


  • Relevant knowledge and experience of special needs environment
  • Understanding of the Safeguarding principles and Child Protection and/or DOLs procedures
  • Experience of managing a range of approaches to managing and de-escalating challenging behaviours
  • Experience working within support/care roles
  • Experience and/or understanding of working within a multi-cultural, inclusive setting
  • Knowledge of basic First Aid is desirable
