Bereavement Support Kitchen Volunteer

This is a hospice-based role, to support the Martlets bereavement groups at their monthly Social Evenings and quarterly Time to Remember events throughout the year by providing refreshments for the group participants. (The average number of attendees is around 25 for the social evenings and 50 - 60 for Time to Remember).

Where: In the Café Kitchen at our Hospice in Wayfield Avenue, Hove, BN3 7LW.

When: On Wednesday evenings. The monthly bereavement social evening runs on the first Wednesday of each month and the Time to Remember is 4 times a year on a Wednesday evening.

Usual minimum commitment:

  • On average between 6.45pm – 9.30pm, for each evening event (time and commitment to be agreed with Counselling and Bereavement Service Manager and Service Administrator).

What you’ll be doing:

  • Providing refreshments for the bereavement events including tea, coffee and cold drinks
  • Setting up the crockery and cutlery, napkins etc. needed
  • Laying out cakes and biscuits etc. on plates for serving
  • Washing and drying crockery, glasses and cutlery, wiping surfaces etc to ensure the café kitchen is left in the same state it was in, prior to use. NB: Training in use of the dishwasher will be provided.

Your skills and abilities:

  • To have insight and awareness of the work of a Hospice
  • To have some experience of making refreshments and washing up and cleaning
  • To recognise one’s own personal boundaries and limitations within the role of being a Bereavement Support Kitchen Volunteer and liaise with CBS manager and administrator as needed
  • To have a non-judgemental and accepting approach to work.


  • To maintain confidentiality at all times within the Bereavement Support Team guidelines
  • To attend a Martlets Welcome Day and complete general induction into the organisation and the counselling and bereavement service.
