Job Description: Out of School Club Playworker &

Afternoon Teaching Assistant

Ideal candidate for both roles but applications for either role separately will be considered.

Qualifications required: Montessori teaching qualification, and or Level 2/3 or equivalent in Early Years Education and Care.

Training and experience in the following would be an advantage:

  • First Aid and Food Hygiene.
  • Child protection/safeguarding.
  • Special Needs.
  • Teaching multi-age groups.
  • Specialist Subjects - Art, Music, Drama, Sports, Languages.
  • Holiday/After school childcare.

Preferred Experience:

At least one year of experience in a similar environment with children aged between 3 and 12 years of age for Out of School Club and from 2 years old for the Teaching Assistant role. To have experience of leading and being responsible for a group of children, as well as working within a diverse teaching team.

Person Specification:

To possess excellent communication skills across age groups, to be kind, patient, clear on boundaries, energetic and confident. Ability to work independently with the children and as part of a team. Desire to be part of an exceptionally committed team of Montessori teachers and other colleagues in a small but dedicated and ambitious environment, requiring flexibility, as well as a responsible and dynamic work ethic.

Responsibilities and Skills Required for the Out of School Club role:

  • Constantly maintain a safe, secure and welcoming environment for the children, through understanding and good example.
  • Be sensitive to different children’s needs and create an environment where everyone can relax from the school day.
  • Be responsible for the upkeep and safe storage of the Out of School Club records, in collaboration with other colleagues.
  • Collect children from participating local schools.
  • Prepare and oversee snacktime.
  • Take the children to the local park or school garden.
  • Create and maintain an orderly environment before, during and after the sessions.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in planning and implementing activities the children will both enjoy and learn from, including arts and crafts, sports and games, reading and homework support, and restful periods where appropriate.
  • Introduce and support children in taking greater care of themselves, others and the club environment.
  • Develop professional knowledge through training and staff meetings.
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately with everyone involved in the school and Out of School Club.

Responsibilities and Skills Required for the afternoon Teaching Assistant role:

  • Helping children aged 2-6 or 6-12 years old set out and enjoy eating their lunches.
  • Helping children to clear up lunchtime and have a rest time or resume activities for the afternoon, under the class teacher’s guidance.
  • Assist the teacher in running group activities, indoor and outdoor as required.
  • Develop professional knowledge through training and staff meetings.
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately with everyone involved in the school and Out of School Club.

Both roles report to the lead class teacher where relevant and to the Head Teacher ultimately.

Successful candidates for either role must understand and sign the staff handbook and all relevant policies and procedures, including safeguarding, data protection, health and safety. Salary £8.00 per hour.

Hours: Out of School Club Playworker

Monday to Friday during term times 2.30 pm - 6.30 pm.

Monday to Friday during holiday club times 8.30 am – 5.30 pm through each half-term and holiday period, except for complete closure for three weeks of the Summer and usually one week of the Christmas holidays. Dates are set at the beginning of the academic year. Possibility of promotion to supervisor position.

Afternoon Teaching Assistant

Monday to Friday during term time 12 pm – 2.30 pm.

In addition, attendance at staff meetings and training days is required. Training and environment preparation sessions are usually held one or two days prior to the beginning of each term, training may also be at other times to fit around contact hours.

Holiday Statutory holiday pay is provided, annual holiday leave to be taken during school holidays, dates of which are published at the beginning of the academic year.

Terms A probationary period of three months subject to satisfactory DBS check and references, reviews and appraisals. Following from successful probationary period notice of two months to be given from either party subject to the Schools’ Terms and Conditions.

Training Training will take place at Brighton & Hove Montessori School, 67 Stanford Avenue, Brighton, BN1 6FB and at different locations dependent on Brighton & Hove City Council.

Brief Overview The Brighton & Hove Montessori School was established in 1985 and has since grown to be respected and well-known in both the local community and international Montessori circles. In addition we are a AMI training school, with Montessori teaching students coming from across the world to observe and learn from our experience, which in turn benefits the children. Our group of parents are friendly and involved, and we strive to make everyone welcome in our community. The Out of School provision is separately registered with the local authority but we maintain close links with a Montessori ethos. The Out of School provision started up in 1998 and has evolved to a flexible community of children from nearby schools and the Montessori.
